Every August, Grenada transforms. The scent of nutmeg and cocoa gives way to the smell of oil and paint. The quiet streets of St. George's fill with drums, conch shells, and thousands of bodies moving as one. This is Spicemas, and it is unlike any other carnival in the Caribbean.
Where It All Began
Spicemas traces its roots to the 1600s, when French settlers brought pre-Lenten masquerade traditions to Grenada. Enslaved Africans on the island transformed these European customs into something entirely their own, using masquerade as a form of resistance, storytelling, and cultural survival. The most powerful symbol of that history still leads the festival today: Jab Jab.
Jab Jab, derived from the French word for devil, began as a protest. Enslaved people covered themselves in molasses, tar, or oil and wore chains and horned helmets, turning the imagery of bondage into a display of defiance and freedom. What started as an act of rebellion is now the heartbeat of J'ouvert morning, regarded across the region as one of the purest expressions of carnival left in the Caribbean.
Grenada moved its carnival from the pre-Lenten calendar to August in 1980, a shift that gave the festival its own identity separate from Trinidad's. The name Spicemas followed, a nod to the nutmeg and mace that built the island's economy and global reputation as the Isle of Spice.
What Makes Spicemas Different
Unlike the carnivals that have grown into large international productions, Spicemas has held onto its roots. The traditional mas characters still walk the road alongside the feathers and sequins: Short Knee, Wild Indians, Vieux Corps, and Moko Jumbies on stilts. J'ouvert remains community-driven rather than commercialized, with music trucks and street vendors instead of large branded bands.
The season builds slowly. Soca Monarch and Panorama preliminaries begin as early as May, with official launch events held both in Grenada and in New York, home to one of the largest Grenadian diaspora communities in the world. By the time August arrives, the island has spent months building toward its biggest celebration of the year.
Spicemas 2026: What to Expect
This year's festival runs through the first two weeks of August, with the peak days landing on Carnival Monday, August 10, and Carnival Tuesday, August 11, both official public holidays in Grenada.
Dimanche Gras, held the Sunday before Carnival Monday, brings the Calypso Monarch competition and the crowning of the King and Queen of the Bands, where masqueraders present elaborate wearable sculptures judged on artistry and craftsmanship.
J'ouvert kicks off at 4 a.m. on Carnival Monday. The conch shell sounds, and the Jab Jab take the streets, covered head to toe in oil, moving through St. George's behind trucks and drums until sunrise.
Monday Night Mas follows that evening, when the city turns luminous. Masqueraders dressed in lights parade through the capital in one of the more visually striking moments of the season.
Carnival Tuesday closes the festival with the Parade of the Bands, Grenada's version of Pretty Mas. Costumed sections move from Melville Street to the National Stadium, judged as they cross the stage, with traditional mas characters woven throughout.
Outside the main events, visitors can expect a full calendar of fetes, boat parties, and pageants in the lead-up to Carnival weekend, along with the Carnival Queen competition, where representatives from each parish compete on beauty, talent, and cultural knowledge.
Planning Your Trip
Grand Anse and St. George's are the best home bases, putting travelers close to both the parade routes and the island's most famous beach. Accommodations sell out months in advance, and airfare climbs sharply during Carnival week, so early planning matters more here than at almost any other Caribbean carnival.
For those who want the full experience without managing the logistics, from costume selection to J'ouvert morning transportation to securing the right vantage point for the Parade of the Bands, that is where Limitless comes in.
Spicemas asks you to move, to sweat, to get a little dirty, and to understand that the freedom on display in those streets was hard-won. Come ready to participate as it is not a spectators sport.
